What is Paycheck Stats?

Paycheck Stats is a paycheck calculator for all 50 states and DC that works like a research center. It answers how much a paycheck takes home, then shows what that number means.

  • Take-home pay

Per paycheck as withheld, and per year after the tax owed.

  • Rank in the state

Where the pay sits among the state's workers, on official wage percentiles.

  • Local prices

What the pay is worth at the state's price level.

  • Every other state

The same salary in all 50 states and DC, and what changes next year.

Where do the numbers come from?

Every number comes from an official source or is calculated from official rules: 433 sources from 192 publishers, each recording the date it was read and the date its numbers take effect.

Where the 433 sources come from

308 of the 433 are state and local tax rules, one set per state. The states are where paychecks differ most.

The methodology explains every step and the sources page lists them all.

How are the numbers checked?

Every rule on the site is tested against its official publication, and auditors who did not write the rules recomputed 838 cases from the official texts. 51 of 51 states and DC run on official 2026 rules today, and a page that cannot show a verified number is not published.

  1. Step 1

    Official text

433 sources, each with the date it was read and the date its numbers take effect.

  2. Step 2

    Coded rules

The federal rules, the rules of 51 states and DC, and 15 official statistics, one per publication.

  3. Step 3

    Tests against the publication

2,319 automated tests, including 35,831 Publication 15-T table cells.

  4. Step 4

    Independent audit

838 checks by auditors who did not write the rules, 829 exact within $1.

What makes it different from other paycheck calculators?

Most paycheck calculators stop at the result. Every one of the 433 pages here adds original statistics computed with the same engine, the 9 statistics pages go deepest, and every table can be downloaded and cited.

The 433 pages by type

9 statistics pages carry the deepest tables; salary after tax pages are the largest group with 172.

  • Is Paycheck Stats affiliated with the IRS or a payroll company?

No. Paycheck Stats is independent, not affiliated with the IRS, the Social Security Administration, any state agency or any payroll company, and nobody pays to appear on it or to change a number.

  • Is this tax advice?

No. The figures are estimates for information only, not tax, legal or financial advice, and your employer's payroll, your benefits and your full tax situation decide your real paycheck. The disclaimer lists the most common reasons a paycheck differs.

  • Can I use or cite the data?

Yes. The statistics tables are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0), so reuse them with a link to the page they come from. Each research page has a ready citation and a table to download.

  • How do I report an error?

Write to hello@paycheckstats.com with the page and the figure. Corrections are checked against the official source and the page's Updated date changes when a number changes.
