Federal withholding uses the flat 22% rate for a bonus paid separately; the state line is the extra state tax for the year on the annual method, which may differ from your state's flat bonus rate.

How much is a bonus taxed in 2026?

Employers withhold 22% federal income tax on a bonus, or 37% on the part over $1 million, plus 6.2% Social Security and 1.45% Medicare and your state's withholding.

This is withholding. The tax you owe on a bonus is settled on your return with the rest of your income.

How much tax will I pay on a $10,000 bonus?

On a $10,000 bonus over $75,000 of salary, $3,415 is withheld in the median state, Oklahoma, leaving $6,585. In Florida, with no income tax, $2,965 is withheld.

How this is calculated
  1. The bonus is paid separately from regular wages, with federal tax withheld at the flat 22%.
  2. State withholding uses the state's published bonus rate where it has one.
  3. The reference worker is a single filer with one job, paid every two weeks, with a standard Form W-4 and no pre-tax deductions, under 65.

What is the bonus tax rate in each state?

State withholding on a bonus runs from 0% in states without a wage tax to 11.7% in New York. The lowest published flat rate is 1.5%, in North Dakota.

Some states have no flat bonus rate and withhold on a bonus as part of regular pay.

Why is my bonus taxed so high?

A bonus is not taxed more than other pay: the flat 22% is only a withholding rate. On a $10,000 bonus over $75,000 of salary, the tax the bonus actually adds for the year is $3,415. That is about what employers withhold, so little changes at filing.

The difference comes back as a refund, or is owed, when you file.

Percentage or aggregate method: which applies to my bonus?

With the percentage method (the bonus paid separately), the flat federal rate takes $2,200 of $10,000. With the aggregate method (the bonus paid with regular wages), the whole paycheck is withheld as normal pay, $2,797 here.

Your employer chooses the method; the tax owed for the year is the same either way.

Common bonuses after taxes

In the median state, a $1,000 bonus keeps $659 after withholding and a $50,000 bonus keeps $32,925.
