How is Utah income tax withheld from a paycheck?

Employers withhold Utah income tax from each paycheck, using the Federal Form W-4 (Utah has no state form) each employee fills in. On a $75,000 salary paid every two weeks, that is $128.00 a paycheck. Utah employers withhold about $225 more a year than the tax owed on $75,000, so a typical worker gets it back at filing.

Employer withholding tables can differ from the yearly tax owed; the return settles the difference.

How this is calculated
  1. Publication 14 schedules for pay periods from June 1, 2026 (used for the whole year): 4.45% of wages less a base allowance, which shrinks by 1.3% of wages above a threshold; each line rounded to the dollar as in the publication's examples. Utah uses the filing status on the federal Form W-4: the married schedule for married filers, the single schedule for single and head of household.
